Knock-knock jokes can be hilarious, but there’s nothing funny about a knocking sound coming from the hood of your vehicle. A knocking sound is a clear sign that something’s up with your car, and may even be a major cause for concern! You’ll need to get to the bottom of it quickly, before costly repairs become necessary. A knocking noise could be the result of a number of issues with your car. Here are a few possible culprits for that annoying knocking sound you’re dealing with:

Faulty Spark Plugs

If you’re hearing a knocking sound when you start up your vehicle, a faulty spark plug may be to blame. Your spark plugs are responsible for the electric spark that gives your car its juice. They’re vital for getting things going! Check with your mechanic if you believe your spark plugs are at the root of the issue. Faulty spark plugs could eventually lead to a decrease in fuel economy, so you’ll definitely want to fix the issue before it gets worse.

Carbon Deposits

While most fuels in the U.S. include carbon cleaning detergents, which prevent the formations of carbon deposits, they still happen. These carbon deposits can block up your vehicle, allowing less room for air and fuel. This alters your car’s compression, which may be the culprit behind that knocking sound you hear. Schedule a maintenance appointment, as excess carbon buildup can lead to damaged cylinders, overheating and lower gas mileage, among other things.

Low AKI (anti-knock index)

Your car may be knocking because of a low octane rating, known as the AKI, or anti-knock index. You may use an octane booster to bring octane levels back to normal, or you could also use a different type of gasoline to see if that fixes the issue. If not, schedule a service appointment.
