No one likes spending money on gas. But much like death and taxes, the need to fuel up your vehicle is inevitable. While you can’t magically turn your vehicle into an electric car overnight, you can, however, take steps to increase your fuel economy. In Part I of this series, we’ll discuss what you can do to increase your fuel economy with just a little effort.

Plan your trips

Planning out your trips can do wonders to increase fuel economy. Taking several short trips can use nearly twice as much fuel as longer trips. So instead of filling your schedule with a handful of errands, you should try your best to combine them to take some of the heat off your car’s engine.

Use the Right Oil

Cars are complex. This is why selecting the right type of oil is so important. You should always refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations when selecting oil during your next oil change. Doing so can help improve your gas mileage by up to two percent!

Replace your Oxygen Sensor

If you’re driving a model built since the mid-80s, chances are good that your car’s got an oxygen sensor in its exhaust system. This should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Believe it or not, this little object has a big effect on fuel economy. Don’t ignore it!

Keep your Foot off the Brake

Contrary to popular belief, resting your foot on the brake isn’t harmless. Even the slightest amount of pressure can affect your car’s components. Leave your foot off the brake when driving to your car’s parts from aging prematurely.
