All You Need to Know About Lane Departure Warning

You may have come across the term “Lane Departure Warning” while out shopping for your new vehicle. This nifty little feature is making an appearance in a growing number of vehicles for a variety of reasons. But why is it becoming so popular? And what does it actually do? Familiarize yourself with Lane Departure Warning to see if a vehicle with this feature is right for you.

The name says it all. Lane Departure Warning is a mechanism that alerts you when you are veering out of your lane. While the concept is fairly straightforward, not all Lane Departure Warning systems are created equal. There are three different types, each with features that set it apart from the rest. What these do have in common, however, is the fact that they utilize cameras that continuously monitor the road as you drive.

Lane Departure Warning

There are no bells and whistles about this one. It’s just a warning. You’ll have to take the corrective action yourself. This type of system doesn’t work if there are no road markings, or if the markings are faded.

Lane Keep Assist

This type of system offers more protection, in that it will steer itself away from lane markings if you get too close. Re-centering the car in the lane is up to you. This is also referred to as a lane keeping system, or lane assist.

Lane Centering Assist

The newest in lane departure technology, Lane Centering Assist always seeks to keep your car centered in its lane. Proactive in its approach, it works well, as long as your car senses your hands are on the wheel.
