Engine sludge sounds gross–and it is. If you’ve been particularly lazy in changing your vehicle’s oil, you may want to rethink that choice!

What is Engine Sludge?

Engine sludge develops on and around your vehicle’s motor when the oil begins to break down.

The broken down oil begins to start collecting, turning into sludge. When enough of the sludge is present, oil cannot properly do its job, which can create more problems.

Warning Signs

There are a few warning signs to look out for before dealing with engine sludge:

  • Your vehicle’s oxygen sensor will start experiencing problems
  • Your vehicle’s motor/spark plug begins to misfire
  • Decreased fuel economy
  • Overheating
  • Check engine light comes on

Identifying Engine Sludge

Ensure your vehicle is off when performing these steps to identify engine sludge:

  • With your vehicle’s hood open, look for signs of oil splatter or sludge on the outside of the vehicle.
Engine sludge will look like clumpy, thick, dark oil
  • Next, examine the oil pan with a flashlight, you should still be able to see the metal beneath any oil present.

If you notice sludge in any of these areas, you definitely have a problem.

What To Do Next

If your vehicle positively identifies with any of the steps above, you must ensure the removal of the sludge.

Take your vehicle to a mechanic, especially if you notice the problem is severe.
