Rust is everyone’s worst fear when it comes to maintaining a vehicle. Finding rust bubbling up under paint or creeping up on the fender is never a good sign.

That being said, finding the early signs of rust isn’t a death sentence for your vehicle. Here are 3 major things you should know about rust!

Rust is Reparable

Rust is a chemical compound that happens to steel and metal when oxygen interacts with those components.

Surface rust can easily be repaired, especially if caught early. Use an abrasive tool like sandpaper to cut through the corrosion until you see bright metal visible. Once all the rust has been sanded away, apply a primer, paint, and clear coat to cover the spot.

Scale rust and rust penetration are harder to work with, but can be handled by professionals if you want to salvage your vehicle.

New Cars DO NOT Come with Rust Protection

Most new cars have plastic covers around the chassis to improve hydrodynamics. The plastic cover can help prevent rust from forming, but it is not 100% fool-proof.

Moisture, dirt, and debris can still accumulate between the vehicle’s undercarriage and the plastic cover. This can lead to rust forming due to the moisture present.

Always Check the Underside of a Car for Rust

If you notice rust popping up in visible areas around your vehicle, that should be a sign you should check the underside.

Take your vehicle to get thoroughly inspected at least once a year by a professional. The mechanic will then be able to check the underside of the vehicle and any other areas susceptible to rust.
