Every state in the United States has its own specific requirements for auto insurance. While some states don’t require auto insurance at all, many others do, like Texas.

Here’s what Texas residents should know about their auto insurance requirements.

Minimum Coverage Levels

Texas requires that drivers carry liability insurance. Liability insurance covers injuries, lost wages, and vehicle damage for the other driver in case of an accident caused by you.

The minimum insurance coverage Texas requires its drivers to have is 30/60/25. These numbers stand for:

  • $30,000 for bodily injury per person
  • $60,000 for bodily injury per accident (when multiple people are hurt)
  • $25,000 for property damage in an accident

Any costs above this, the at-fault driver must pay out of their pocket, or be sued for costs by the other party involved. The minimum liability does not cover personal injuries or damage to your vehicle.

Other Considerations

Texas does not require drivers to have UM or UIM insurance. However, Texas does offer medical payments (MedPay) and PIP insurance for extra insurance coverage.

These insurance add-ons will cover you if you are injured in an accident, whether you’re the driver or a passenger. Speak to your insurance agent to find out which type of coverage would be best suited for you.
