Getting into a car accident can be really scary, especially if there are children involved.
If you happen to get into an accident where a child in a car seat is present in your vehicle, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that that car seat be replaced.
When You Need to Replace
The NHTSA recommends replacing a car seat in the event of a moderate to severe crash. However, if the accident was minor but in the area where the car seat was, NHTSA recommends that the car seat should get replaced.
This is done due to the safety of the car seat being compromised after an accident. The manufacturer’s instructions for the car seat should have detailed instructions on what to do with the seat after a crash.
The NHTSA advises that no replacement is necessary if:
- The vehicle can be driven away from the accident
- There is no vehicle damage near the car seat
- No one in the vehicle is hurt
- The air bags did not deploy
- The car seat has no damage
However, you should always consult the car seat’s manufacturer instructions.
