If you’ve ever purchased a vehicle, you know that they are quite the investment. There’s the initial cost of the down payment, the insurance, and, of course, the maintenance! What’s more, purchasing a used vehicle is a little different from buying a new vehicle. You’ll need to be a little more vigilant when buying a used car. Aside from the fact that the used vehicle you’ve got your eye on might have been in an accident or two, there’s just no telling what kind of repairs you’re in for once you drive off the lot. Here are a few things to look out for next time you’re in the market for a used vehicle.

Body

We’re aware that this may seem like a bit of a no-brainer, but you’ve got to examine the car’s exterior for scratches, rust or dents before you buy. While small scratches may be no biggie, rust can be a major cause for concern, and one that might keep you from driving off in that used vehicle. Also take note of the car’s paint job to make sure it is even in all parts. From misaligned panels, to large gaps, your car’s exterior can tell you a lot about its assembly and thus, its reliability. Don’t fall into the trap! If you’re purchasing used, you still want a look that compares with all the new ones out there.

Glass

You could be in for some major annoyance if you drive off in a used vehicle only to later notice a cracked windshield. Carefully inspect the car’s glass, looking for cracks or pocked areas. These aren’t necessarily dealbreakers, per se, as cracked glass can easily be fixed. If you do notice something amiss, though, broach the subject during negotiation. There’s no reason why you should be paying full asking price when there is a clear flaw in your windshield. Shop smart!

Tires

Tires are a good indicator of the health of your vehicle. If you’re purchasing a used vehicle at a reputable car lot, all four tires should be up to par. Be sure all four tires on the used vehicle are the same, and that the tread wear is in good condition. Use the old penny test if you have doubts. If there’s one feature you don’t want to gamble on, it’s tires.

Suspension

Suspension is important in regard to your vehicle’s driving capabilities. Testing a used car’s suspension is fairly easy. Bounce each corner of the car up and down. If its shock absorbers are sufficient, the car will rebound once. If it keeps moving up and down, it could have an issue with suspension. This may lead to costly repairs! Beware!
