Alfresco Weslaco: Mexican Independence 2018

Alfresco Weslaco is back for another month of entertainment, food, and fun! On Thursday, September 20 the city of Weslaco celebrated Mexican Independence.

Alfresco Weslaco is a family-friendly event that happens every month. Vendors from all over the mid-Valley area attended to sell their products, food and connect with locals from all over the Valley.

Historic Downtown was decorated with papel picado, bright colored flowers and authentic Mexican decorations.

The main street bustled with people of all ages. Attendees danced to music, mingled with vendors and browsed through The Weslaco Museum and antique shops.

The theme of this month’s Alfresco Weslaco was centered around Mexican Independence. Deis y Seis de Septiembre (September 16) is a landmark holiday for Mexico.

On September 16, 1810 in Dolores Hidalgo, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla stood on his church steps to read out the Grito de Dolores calling for Mexico’s independence against Spain. From 1810-1821, after many losses and setbacks, the Treaty of Cordoba was signed on August 24, 1821 which finally granted Mexico’s independence from Spain under the Plan of Iguala.

Deis y Seis de Septiembre is celebrated throughout Texas and Mexico as Mexico’s first step towards independence from Spain.

Alfresco Weslaco honors this historical holiday with a sense of companionship for our southern neighbor-country. The Rio Grande Valley is rich with Mexican-American culture, which is why this month’s theme at Alfresco Weslaco made sure to celebrate appropriately.

Alfresco Weslaco featured music acts such as Salinas de Nuevo Leon, performances by the Weslaco East High School band, cheer and dance squads.

The Payne Street Team attended to mingle with guests, take photos and pass out Payne Auto Group memorabilia. Also featured by Payne Auto Group were a Jeep and a Ram truck alongside the vintage car show behind the main stage.

As proud sponsors of Alfresco Weslaco, we are excited for every month we are invited to attend and sponsor this event. For more information about Alfresco Weslaco please visit their Facebook page.
