Cell phones are a part of everyday life for many of us, but they can be a major source of distraction. Especially when driving! But that’s not the only distraction a.k.a. hazard you’ll encounter on the road. There are plenty of other things that can take your attention away from driving, and these can all lead to a major accident if you’re not careful. Ditch these distractions the next time you get behind the wheel to ensure safety at every turn.

Texting

Did you know texting while driving is now illegal in the state of Texas? Not only can you get a ticket, but you are also putting lives at risk when you distract yourself this way while behind the wheel. Just. Don’t. Do. It!

Talking on hand-held devices

Any time your mind is anywhere other than the road, there’s a risk for danger. Even if you’re using Bluetooth connectivity to go hands-free, talking on the phone can still be a distraction, especially during heavy traffic. Wait to use the phone after you’ve reached your destination. You’ll be glad you did!

Eating.

Eating on the road is inevitable sometimes, but that’s not to say it can’t distract you from your driving. It’s best to pull into a parking lot to get your munch on.

Reaching for items

This is a big one. Whether you’re reaching down for the phone you just dropped, or are reaching behind to get something from the backseat, taking your hands off the wheel and eyes off the road is always a no-no.

Applying makeup/shaving

Harmless as it may seem, applying makeup as you drive can be a major distraction, and one that’s totally not worth it! The same goes for shaving for men. Leave it for the bathroom, folks!

Operating music devices, such as iPods

You’re doing a great thing by not texting and driving, but looking at your phone as you select music can be just as dangerous. Get your playlist in order before you take off to ensure you’re not distracted as you drive.
