The 21-year-old Figueroa has blazed a path throughout his career thus far with 17-0 and 12 KOs. This is the third big fight of the year for Figueroa, who previously KO’d Luis Roy Cruz in one round in August and put away Giovanni Delgado in seven rounds in March.
On September 30, Figueroa stepped into the ring with Oscar “El Guerrero” Escandon. Escandon comes with a record of 25-5, 17 KO’s and is a former interim titlist.
The bantamweight fight on PBC on FS1 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California was a Figueroa’s first headlining televised card fight. As soon as the first bell rang, Figueroa and Escandon started off at a fast pace. Figueroa, who typically fights at a distance, wanted to make a statement that he isn’t afraid to fight on the inside. Both combatants went through 10 rounds of high volume fighting. This was new territory for Figueroa who at most has gone through 8 rounds at the most. It was in the 10th and final round that Figueroa caught Escandon with a solid uppercut that floored him and as he beat the count, it was clear Escandon was out on his feet as the fight was waived off.
Figueroa took the match in the 10th round, adding another notch in his KO belt. When asked about the fight, Escandon remarked, “I knew Figueroa was good, but I was surprised at how tough he was.”
