Hurricane Preparedness: How to Stay Safe in the Event of a Storm

The devastation surrounding Hurricane Harvey is all too real for Texans. Hurricane season is here, and while you likely know to take precautions for your home, did you know the same applies to your car? You should always be prepared in the event of an emergency. With our South Texas weather as unpredictable as it is, the time to act is now. So keep these hurricane preparedness tips in mind the next time you hit the road during hurricane season.

Have a Plan

Think of a meeting spot for your family members to gather in the event of an emergency where phone lines are down.

Keep a Full Tank

It’s important to have an escape route, and keeping your car filled up will leave one less worry in the midst of chaos. Unfortunately, not only may gas stations be closed during a hurricane, but power outages may affect your ability to pump, as well.

Know Your Surroundings

Be aware that certain roads or bridges may be closed off due to heavy rain and flooding. Opt for an alternate route that will get you to safety. When it comes to evacuation routes, though, be sure to follow directions exactly.

Be Prepared

Keeping an emergency kit in your good car is wise — hurricane season or not. So have it stocked with flashlight, batteries, first aid supplies and other important items.

Be Early

Evacuations are hectic. Give yourself enough time to get to your destination safely. Furthermore, stay tuned into your radio stations for up-to-date information on the storm.
