If you have upgraded to an electric vehicle (EV) or even a a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), know that they still need regular maintenance.

While EV’s and PHEV’s lack most of the components a gas or diesel vehicle have, it is suggested that owners follow a series of periodic checks and services in order to keep the vehicle’s warranty in effect.

Here are a few of the requirements EV and PHEV owners should do to maintain their electric vehicle.

Monthly

EV and PHEV owners should check their tires on a monthly basis, every 7,500 miles, or what the maintenance manual suggests.

At the 7,500 mile mark owners should consider:

  • Tire rotation
  • Fluids (coolant, wiper, steering)
  • Inspect (brakes, suspension, chassis)
  • Damage check (accelerator pedal, gas struts)
  • Check safety restraints (belts, airbags, safety systems)

Twice a Year

Twice a year owners should flush any corrosive materials from the underbody of the vehicle. This can also be done any time you take the vehicle through a car wash.

Every 15,000 miles:

  • Replace wiper blades

Every 36,000 miles:

  • Replace cabin air filter

Every 75,000 miles

  • Replace hood and/or body lift support gas struts

Every Five to Seven Years

Every five to seven years owners should drain and fill vehicle coolant circuits, replace brake fluid, and have the A/C desiccant changed.

Keep an eye on the battery pack, as all EV and PHEV battery packs will eventually degrade over time.

As always, consult your vehicle’s owner manual for precise information on how to care for your EV or PHEV.
