It’s summer in the Rio Grande Valley and temperatures are peaking in the triple digits!

Before you head out onto the road to South Padre Island, read these helpful tips for driving in a heatwave!

Before Hitting the Road

Before any long journey, it should be a rule of thumb to give the vehicle you’re taking a maintenance check.

  • Check the battery
  • Check the vehicle’s cooling system
  • Check the fluid levels
  • Check the A/C
  • Check tire pressure
  • Repack your vehicle’s emergency kit

Ensure these systems in your vehicle are functional and able to handle long use.

On the Road

While on the road, be sure to monitor your vehicle’s dashboard. Notice if any lights suddenly come on, or if your vehicle starts overheating. r

Remember that it gets hot inside a car as well. Ensure the safety of any people or pets inside your vehicle and do not leave anyone or your pet unattended in a hot car.
