Used cars are a great option for those who are looking for a great deal. Many of our Payne Preowned dealerships offer luxury brands, trucks, sedans, and family vehicles.

If you’re in the market for a used vehicle, check out these quick tips on what to inspect when looking at used vehicles!

Rust

Rust is a sign of corroded metal or steel which could mean the vehicle’s structure could be compromised. Further, rust doesn’t just affect the vehicle’s frame, it could spread virtually anywhere there is steel or metal.

Some places you can check a vehicle for rust is under the carpeting in the trunk, doors, around the windshield, and the rear windshield. Also, if you notice the exterior paint bubbling up, that is likely an early sign of rust as well.

Exterior Blemishes

Do a walk around the vehicle to see if there is any exterior damage, like dents, scratches, or missing parts.

If there is any damage, ask the seller about it, or request the CarFax to see if the vehicle had been in any accidents.

Exterior damage could be a sign that the previous owner didn’t take care of the vehicle, and may lead to internal mistreatment as well. Though, this isn’t always the case. Ask questions about any damage you may see to get the information you need.

Unusual Noises

You don’t have to be an experienced mechanic to be able to listen for unusual noises in the vehicle.

Turn the vehicle on and let it run for a few minutes. Listen for any noises such as ticking, tapping, or knocking.

Inspect under the hood as well to see if any belts or parts are damaged.
