Hearing a potential problem with your vehicle can be concerning–especially if you hear it while driving. Before you take your vehicle to a mechanic, here are a few common vehicle noises to listen for.

Squealing Noises

If your vehicle makes a high-pitched squealing noise as you accelerate, it could be due to a few issues: a worn serpentine belt, a worn pulley that is causing the belt to slip, or the pulleys are loose and need to be tightened.

Rattling Noises

Rattling noises may be an indicator of something loose or unsecured under the hood or beneath the vehicle.

If the noise is coming from underneath the hood, it could be a loose or failing water pump. This sound may be the most pronounced when the vehicle is idling.

If you noticed the noise from beneath the vehicle, there could be something wrong with the exhaust system. If the rattling sounds loud while the vehicle is idling, it could be a sign to replace the catalytic converter.

Whining Noises

If you notice your vehicle making a whining noise, it could be a sign of a few issues.

One issue to look out for is low power steering fluid. If you notice the whining noise coming from the front of the engine, it could be a sign of the power steering pump having a leak or the fluid being low.

If you find the whining noise happens when you put your vehicle in reverse, it could be due to a clogged transmission fluid filter.

Grinding Noises

If you notice grinding or screeching noises underneath your vehicle, it could be due to worn brake linings or a failing wheel/ hub bearings, or (if your vehicle is manual) the clutch is overly worn or needs to be adjusted.

If you notice the grinding noise happens whenever you press your brakes, then it could be that your brake components are worn down. This noise happens because the brake linings have worn down to the metal, and then it starts rubbing against the metal brake pad backing.
