The unthinkable has happened: your car battery is dead! Maybe you saw it coming. Maybe you were caught completely off guard. Either way, you’ll need a replacement right away. Batteries can typically last well past three years, but to be on the safe side, have yours checked every year after the third year.

Here are a few signs that may warn you that a bum battery is coming soon.

Check Engine Light

That lit-up Check Engine Light isn’t just there to annoy you – you may actually have an issue on your hands. If your Check Engine Light is lit up like a Christmas tree, your battery may be in need of a little TLC.

Low Fluid Levels

Did you know that batteries require fluid? Indeed, they do. Part of their casing is usually translucent, allowing you to monitor its fluid levels. If you notice fluid is below your car’s lead plates, you’ll want to get your battery and charging system evaluated sooner rather than later.

Bloated Battery Casing

Excessive heat may cause your battery’s casing to swell or bloat. The culprit will be quite obvious. This can easily decrease your battery life, so do take note of your casing’s condition to see if you’ll need a replacement any time soon.
