One of the most important things we can get as drivers is auto insurance. In fact, it’s a requirement in the state of Texas to have some type of auto insurance.

That being said, not everyone follows this law, and due to Texas being a ‘fault’ state, it can be a real bummer when someone hits your vehicle and they don’t have liability insurance to help cover any costs you may need.

So, is there anything you can do to protect yourself, and your wallet, from uninsured or underinsured drivers?

UM & UIM Insurance

Uninsured Motorist coverage applies when the at-fault driver is not insured, thus leaving you to pay for the medical costs. UM insurance pays for medical expenses if you or one of your passengers are hurt.

Underinsured motorist coverage applies when the at-fault driver liability limits aren’t enough to cover your bills. UIM insurance covers medical expenses, lost wages if you or one of your passengers are hurt.

Do I Need UM or UIM Insurance?

Texas does not require motorists to have UM or UIM insurance. But, that doesn’t mean it’s not a good option to have.

Talk with your insurance agent to see if UM or UIM insurance is a good option for you, or if there is a plan that covers this type of insurance. Be sure to ask what exactly is covered under UM and UIM insurance, as different states have different requirements.
